There's nothing like a burst of spring finally to get out of the winter slump, and get excited about taking off those layers. UK Spring time is notorious for deceiving you to believe it's a lot warmer than it actually is. I always used to get my transitional wardrobe wrong by pulling out all my summer pieces too early but nowadays, I much prefer buying and wearing staples that see me through all seasons. Having said that, now is the perfect time to change wardrobe essentials. The important thing is not to feel the need to go out and buy new clothes, but pull out classic essentials you've stashed away. Based on style and preference, everyone will have different staples. Mine are very much about layers and day wear items that are smart but comfortable. I used to spend more money on going out/evening clothes before realising that daytime pieces are far more important, as we tend to spend more time in them. As far as my top ten essentials go for spring, my hero pieces include:
1) The leather Jacket
You can never go wrong with a leather jacket because it's so versatile and easy to wear. There's not much it won't go with in your wardrobe, but it also adds some edge to a softer feminine look. I also love the fact that it's a transitional piece you can wear through seasons as well.
2) The lightweight scarf
Never go anywhere without a scarf! You'd be surprised how much warmer you are as soon as you fully cover your neck (just realised how much of an old woman I sound but I don't care, it's the truth). I've seen some great prints in ASOS and Not on the high street but my favourite has to be this Pamela palm print from Accessorize. Scarves are perfect for layering and are again transitional.3)The perfect pair of jeans
Whether your go to denim is the skinny, boyfriend, flare or straight leg, a good fitting pair of jeans will go a long way. My staple jean has to be the skinny and the boyfriend (depending on my mood), which I like to wear with a plain t-shirt or vest layered with one of my trusted blazers or leather jacket. I also like the fact that double denim is still in for SS15 which means my denim shirt will get even more wears!
As soon as the sun's out, sunglasses are the must have accessory. I have two pairs I wear all the time; my aviator Ray-Bans and a cheap pair I picked up in a vintage store in LA for $10. The most important thing is taking the time to find a pair that suit and flatter your face. I definitely prefer the big, rounded shape as small glasses generally don't work for me. These are a must have item that stay in my bag as soon as spring hits.
For me, jumpsuits are essential for spring. Not only are they easy to throw on, they are versatile and can be transformed into many different outfits. I'm still obsessed with the black Zara jumpsuit I bought over a year ago, but it's also nice to invest in one that's more colourful and summery for the season. I love the black and white number from In the Style which I would either wear with a biker jacket to make it edgier or a blazer for a more classic look.
6) The trench coat/mac
The mac or trench coat is a classic spring essential and the ideal lightweight cover up. The thrill of packing away my winter coat can't come soon enough though I am yet to find a spring coat I like. Military is a huge trend so you can't go wrong with the simple khaki or green version but I also love the colour block stories in bright green, yellow and orange, or the pastel alternatives in baby pink or blue.
7) The chunky knit
You can't get through UK spring (or summer for that matter) without some good knitwear. As we all know, the unpredictable weather plays havoc to our summer wardrobe so I'm really into chunky knit jumpers at the moment. I love wearing them with boyfriend jeans and heels or a short bandage skirt with wedge heels.
8) The daytime flats
Unless you're Victoria Beckham, it's hard to rock a pair of 5 inch heels all day long. Daytime flats are a definite must have so it’s worth investing in a nice smart pair that can work with most of your wardrobe. Brogues or loafers in a summery colour are a good choice as are quirky floral or sparkly espadrilles. Ballet pumps are also handy as they can squeeze into your handbag and enable you to swap on the days you do go for heels.
9) The pleated midi skirt
1. Topshop PU pleated midi skirt | 2. New Look monochrome skater skirt |3.Michael Kors floral lace midiI've steered away from midi skirts in the past because I always felt too short to pull them off, but when I saw one on a girl shorter than me worn really well (street style stalking), I thought why not? The midi pencil skirt has been on trend for a while now but the pleated A-line midi has made a huge come back over the last few seasons. I especially love the lace and denim fabrics but also the wet/patent leather look. Midi skirts are great for spring as your legs are out but still covered up. You do need to choose the right length for your height because they can drown you if you go too long. Go for one that’s no longer than half way through your calf. I'm experimenting with mine at the moment (I have a black lace one and a green one) but you can wear them with everything if you get the length right; plain t-shirt or vest, blazer, jumper, crop top or fitted shirt.
10) The cross-body bag
If you weren't aware, small bags are back in! I love the big 'can carry a kitchen sink' kind of bags but there is something to be said about the small cross-body. Spring should be about clearing and de-cluttering and that includes your bag! Holidays, festivals, weddings and summer events all work better with a smaller bag so it's worth pulling out ones you already have from your wardrobe or investing in a new one. The Cross body satchel been especially popular over the last few seasons with no signs of slowing down.
